Technology Companies Accelerate the Development of a Quality Bean
Technology companies have the resources to enhance research and move innovative ideas to market. The availability of specialized products will help companies throughout the value chain, especially end users.

Technology providers have worked with university researchers to make low linolenic soybean varieties a reality. Monsanto has created the VISTIVE™ soybean variety, while Pioneer is marketing low-lin soybeans whose oil will be sold by Bunge North America under the NUTRIUM™ brand. Both soybean varieties contain less than a three percent low linolenic oil level, which in turn will eliminate the incidence of trans fats in foods.

The soybean varieties from Monsanto and Pioneer will send a positive ripple throughout the entire value chain. The enhanced varieties will increase yield without sacrificing performance for farmers, utilize innovative technology from universities and research institutions, and give processors healthier oils for use in foods.

The third available product that offers a trans fat solution comes from Iowa State University. The low linolenic variety produces soybean oil with a 1 percent linolenic acid. Iowa State’s variety was developed by conventional breeding methods and is non-GMO. This variety also eliminates the incidence of trans fats in foods.
