Soybean Traits in the Pipeline A number of desired oil and meal traits are currently in the pipeline -- some further out than others. The first trait-enhancement from the pipeline was a low-linolenic variety, which is now commercially available. The next traits expected to emerge are increased oleic varieties, followed by low-saturate, and then low-phytate, which is important for improved meal characteristics. The traits furthest in the pipeline are increased Omega-3, mid-oleic/low-saturate, higher metabolizable energy and combination traits. Public and private breeders are constantly working on additional traits and/or combinations of these traits so the pipeline extends much further than what is pictured here.
