Measurements and Standards

Setting the Standard for the Industry
To maximize new and emerging trait improvements that meet the QUALISOY definition of quality, U.S. soybean farmers are working with all points in the soybean value chain to create an industry standard for measuring soybean components. Since soybeans are increasing in their component value, it is becoming even more important to accurately measure that value and to differentiate beans that have desired traits.

Currently, there is not a standard way of measuring soybean traits. Either there is no measurement taken, or components such as protein and oil are taken at different moisture levels. Also, there is no standard calibration of the equipment used to take measurements, which creates a challenge for buyers who need consistent quality for the soybeans and soybean byproducts they are purchasing.

Specifically, the QUALISOY initiative, which is funded in part by the soybean checkoff, is establishing quality parameters for traits such as protein, oil, soluble sugars and amino acids.
